I created a conceptual park made up of 6 different lands that represent both the castle park lands and some of the classic genres of sci-fi, each allowed to be completely unique in tone and style. At the center is Space Mountain as the park icon, inspired by this piece of Hench/Ryman concept art.

I've had a print of the above John Hench and Herb Ryman concept for early Space Mountain up on my bedroom wall for the last 10 years. It may be my favorite Disney art piece. I love the movement and sense of life and the modern style. I look at it all the time.
I love the idea of Tomorrowland just as much, even though they've all got some issues in their modern forms. I like sci-fi stories, and I like futuristic settings that offer a look ahead, and I like the kind of adventures and experiences that are possible in a land like Tomorrowland.
Somehow, I got stuck on the idea of how Tomorrowland could expand to something bigger, maybe to a whole park. And then I knew this was my next project. I wanted to make a park that takes the form and lands of a castle park and puts it through the lens of Tomorrowland and the sci-fi genre.
One element of this plan that I challenged myself to include was expansion space for each land, noted on the site plans. I wanted this to feel like a real park that could grow over time.
Check out an enlarged site plan of each land below, which includes more descriptive text and callouts for the attractions, food and beverage, retail, and other various icons through the lands.

CENTURY PORT AND PLAZA - The entrance land, a space port city of the future, where travelers cross paths on their exciting trips across the universe. The winding path ushers visitors forward towards the Century Port tower, where there are high-speed rocket dispatches across space. Overhead peoplemover and monorail tracks add kinetics and great views to the dynamic city of the future.
ROGUE PLANET - An outer world outpost planet filled with scoundrels from across the galaxy and known for its underground economy of black market piracy. A new imperial fort across the bay keeps a watchful eye on the rogue activity but a new Pirate King is set on taking back the planet.

METRO PLANET - A hyper-urban city planet dominated by a technological megacorp where science and technology rule all parts of life. It includes a bustling downtown district, an indoor underground cybermarket, and a research lab outpost. Technology brings new dangers and adventures to the planet.
STATION B99 - A high tech space station that supports a series of research colonies on the moons of a distant solar system. Accessed only by a launch theater experience, the two level station looks out to deep space and shows off the best of living in the future.
VENTURE PLANET - A distant unexplored planet made of a variety of extreme and contrasting biomes, now ready to be explored by a scientific research venture. It includes a tropic jungle biome with giant plants, a polar biome with ice caves, and an underwater biome with mysterious aquatic ruins.
LEGENDS PLANET - A legendary crystalline planet that is home to an ancient royal race that collects the stories and artifacts of cultures around the galaxy. The ancient Crystal Tower Palace at the planet’s center stores and broadcasts this archive of the galaxy’s legends across the universe.

To finish this post off, I have a clean site plan of the park. There's a lot of details in this plan, zoom in to really check them out.
Thanks for reading!
I love this theme. I kind of get echoes from existing IP lands in parks such as existing Tomorrowland (Century Port), Galaxy's Edge (Rogue Planet), Metro Planet (Avenger's Campus), Station B99 (Horizons/Future World) and Venture Planet (Pandora). Is this something you had been considering as you designed it, so that if it were hypothetically taken up by Disney they could kind of gear it towards their IPs?
ReplyDeleteSorry half way through I switched round the existing/new lands I was writing out!
